To be employed as a navigating officer on a merchant ship, it is necessary to obtain a “Certificate of Competency” under the regulations in force in India, relating to the examinations of Masters and Mates in the Mercantile Marine. After completing 3 years degree programme in Nautical Science on Training Ship, the cadet officer has to complete 1 year in the deck department on merchant ship before becoming eligible for the grant of second mate certificate of competency.
