Number of IITs in India
When we talk about the IITs, we talk about the best engineering colleges of India, with all the top 5 positions in engineering colleges is taken by IITs. The Indian Institute of Technology have been integral to the movement of the country on a path of growth and development. On the recommendation of Sarkar Commission, 5 Indian Institutes of Technology were established between 1950-61. However, the number has risen to 16 now. The Institutes of Technology Act, governs the IITs which are autonomous public engineering institutes of India. The Act declares them as ‘institutions of national importance’, and lays down their powers, duties, framework for governance, etc.

For admission in any IIT, the students are first required to appear in JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) and then the top 50,000 students are called to sit in JEE Advance, which is specifically for the selection in IITs and few other engineering institutes of National Importance like Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), Indian School on Mines, etc.
The Candidates who clear JEE Mains but not selected under JEE Advance, can apply in various engineering colleges who accept the JEE Mains score for admission like IIITs and NITs followed by other government and private engineering colleges.
