India has one of the largest education system in the world with 25.9 million students enrolled in roughly 45,000 degree and diploma institutions in the country. There has been a high growth, particularly in the last decade, with an increase in enrolment of students to 10.8% from 9%.
After completing 12 years of primary, secondary and higher education, individuals pursue further higher education with two choices: diploma or degree. A diploma (sometimes called a certificate) requires mostly two years to complete. After completing a degree, a student can continue with post graduate studies or Masters of Philosophy followed by another 2-5 years to earn a PH.D referred to as a research degree. One another alternative is that after obtaining a degree, rather than continuing with post-graduate studies, a student can choose to pursue a postgraduate diploma or certificate. PG Diploma or Certificates are courses of professional studies ranging from 1 to 3 years to complete.
